The Evolution of The Align Tote

The Evolution of The Align Tote

When starting the design process, I expected it would take several tries to get it right, and sure enough, it did.

Initially, the focus was on a bag for your workouts and THEN everything else. So we experimented with having straps for a yoga mat either in the front of the bag, incorporated into the design, or at the bottom. But when our first sample arrived, we noticed that the elastic straps lose its shape and therefore end up hanging from the bottom. Moreover, In doing some research and speaking to people, most people attend classes or gyms that provided yoga mats already, so really, how important was this feature?

.

When our first sample arrived, the drawstring bags for shoes and clothes were attached inside to the bottom of the bag as requested, but what if people didn’t always need them inside? Or more importantly, we realised they need to be cleaned. So in the next sample, we worked on having these as add ons rather than attached, and decided to keep the colourways as a standard black and brown – something that would fit anyone's wardrobe.

.

A couple rounds later, we came closer to what we wanted. I carried the bag through my life – from workouts, to errands, to and from work and social plans. And slowly realised the materials, colours and structure of this sample felt more right, just a few more changes and we’re there.

Somehow once again, the next sample didn’t feel very sturdy and because of the combination of a polyester interior and polyurethane leather exterior, it loses its shape over time. So we added reinforcement to the front and back panels and refined the little details to bring it all together, and we finally got to our finished product.
